Taboo....???....

Well I think That John Risley is actually playing the devils advocate on this issue. Ironically that’s what he calls himself. I mean, he’s saying we need to just “get over” our feelings of victimization and put complete trust in the Canadian Government to do what is in the best interest of the Native People. Ummmm…..does any one remember Bill C31…...?. What about the book, The Unjust Society, which illustrates numerous low blows taken by Aboriginals from the Canadian Government for years. Of course there is alienation, because of people like him who have no remorse or feelings of guilt for what has happened in the past, and has brought us to this point. If anyone did any capitalizing it was the Europeans when they took advantage of the good nature of the Aboriginals. In the instance of British Columbia and the taxation issues, it is just a prime example of the Aboriginal authority learning from their teachers. You know how the saying goes do unto others as you would want done to you. As far as these non-natives, and the idea of not having voting rights, but are paying taxes, is absurd. We are talking about realty and land, not governments. These people reside on land, not belong to them, so they should pay tax. Just as though if we resided on their land, we would pay land tax too. As far as voting, your place of residence should have no bearing on whether one has rights to vote with in a particular self government or not. Risley is obviously bitter about the rights we do have, and is attempting to influence others to see his point of view. Articles like these make it clear that there is still a long way to go before we reach a level were complete respect for Aboriginal Governments, as a real government that is abundant, and that this a government that is hear to stay.
